I know you know that he was the one who was rude, not you. When someone hurts you, and you simply say, "That hurts," you are being kind to yourself and kind to the other person.
I know you were angry when he made those awful, judging comments. Still, when you spoke to him, you spoke about how it made you feel. You didn't judge him or say hateful things to him. You wanted him to know how you felt, and you also acted in a manner that let him know you expected that he did not intend to hurt you. In that way, you showed you held him in high regard and that you felt he would want to know when he hurt another person.
It is good that he is embarrassed about his bad behavior. He needs to be. Maybe that discomfort will cause him to re-evaluate his attitude. At any rate, you did the right thing.
Now it's up to him to hide or change, or hide and change.
