It's funny the closer we get to 30, the younger 30 seems to sound. :)
Zack took his birthday off and we headed down to Santa Cruz for surfing and fun.
First, Zack and Jack played in the FREEZING cold water. Jack came up to me after a few minutes and informed me that we have to buy him a wet suit like Papa. The boys had a blast in the water. Poor Jack got stripped down to his onesie because I totally spaced and forgot a separate change of close for him. After playing together, Zack went off to surf and the rest of us headed over to the boardwalk for games and rides. Jack loved the carousel and also tried his hand at the race car driving ride. The ride was slow until it whipped us around the corner. Jack got so scared that he put his head in my lap and refused to sit up or open his eyes until the ride was over.
Zack had a great time surfing and after a quick stop for food, and a dentist appointment (Zack's logic: have a dentist appointment on your birthday and it's a sick day off work) we regrouped for dinner at In-n-out and then a two-can cake (think chocolate cake with two cans of frosting).
The cake pan overflowed in the oven, and sunk a bit under the weight off the frosting, but it was so good! Despite having to sing Happy birthday twice, the first time I accidentally sung Happy birthday to Jack (oops) it was a great day!
Happy, happy birthday Zack!

Happy Birthday Zack! We're excited to see you and the fam in April.
Happy Birthday, Zack! It seems like only yesterday that you were born at Holy Cross Hospital in an area of Silver Spring, Maryland called Four Corners. The name came from being where Colesville Road and University Blvd intersected. Dad and I were 27 and 9 months past law school. We were on top of the world.
In those days we didn't routinely know the sex before a child was born. With two big sisters we hoped for a boy, but were very prepared for a third girl. (I am, myself, the third of three sisters.) We were so excited to discover you were a wonderful and healthy 8 1/2 pound boy.
I don't remember the labor being unusually hard and we had a GREAT nurse in the labor room with us. We felt confident that our Lamaze natural-childbirth skills would all come back to us. After all, not only had we taken the class (twice?) but we also had two previous experiences. What a surprise when we couldn't remember all those little techniques they taught us for ignoring pain and soldiering on. It was a wonderful time to find such great labor room help. Dad vowed that next time we would take the refresher course. He makes a great coach.
It was hard finding someone to watch our two little girls (4 and 2 1/2) when it was time to go to the hospital. Many people had offered, but Annee was running a high fever, and that made people with kids reluctant. It was late at night and we called an older couple in the ward and asked if we could drop Sarah and Annee off on our way to the hospital. They put the girls toe to toe in a twin bed where they spent the rest of the night.
You have been a constant source of joy ever since. I’m especially glad that as a father, you now have an idea of how much love we feel for you.
Love always, Mom
Happy Birthday Zack! You sure know how to party it up. Good for you to take time and do something special on your birthday! And very clever trick to go to the dentist and take a sick day. I love you and appreciate how kind and giving you are as a brother.
A hardy happy birthday!! I was laughing about the two can cake. I remember being somewhere with you in a kitchen, when you asked me if I knew the secret to a great cake. Of course, I didn't. And you quickly informed me it was using TWO cans of frosting. Not just the traditional one. What a guy. You're a TWO CAN kind of a guys about life as well. Live it to the fullest. Have a happy year. And 30 IS most definately YOUNG!!!!!
Yay Zack! Sounds like an awesome day. I like having my teeth clean after the dentist so that's a nice birthday activity as well. I love you!
